Āyat al-Kursī
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ
Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa ʾl-Ḥayyu ʾl-Qayyūm. Lā taʾkhudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm. Lahu mā fī ʾs-samāwāti wa mā fī ʾl-arḍ. Man dhā ʾlladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih? Yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shayʾin min ʿilmihi illā bimā shāʾ. Wasiʿa kursiyyuhu ʾs-samāwāti wa ʾl-arḍ, wa lā yaʾūduhu ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwa ʾl-ʿAliyyu ʾl-ʿAẓīm.
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Commentary
Hisn al-Muslim cites the virtue as follows: “Whoever says this when he rises in the morning will be protected from jinn until he retires in the evening, and whoever says it when retiring in the evening will be protected from them until he rises in the morning.” Reported by al-Hakim 1/562. Al-Albani graded it authentic in Sahih at-Targhib wa’t-Tarhib 1/273 and traced it to an-Nasa’i and at-Tabarani, noting that at-Tabarani’s chain of transmission is reliable (jayyid).
